3rd Grade
Family Tradition Quilt
We started this project by reading selections from Family Pictures/Cuadras de familia by Carmen Lomas Garza and discussing what a tradition is. Students shared some of their family traditions, and then designed a symbol and a pattern to represent a tradition of their choice. Then, students drew and carved their symbol and pattern on to styrofoam and made a series of 12 prints of each design, using their choice of colors of ink and paper. Finally, we looked at examples of traditional quilt patterns and students arranged their prints on a background to make a paper quilt showing their family tradition.
Gesture Drawing
During this one day mini-lesson, students practiced gesture drawing using peer models.
Devo Portrait
After practicing gesture drawing, students brainstormed activities they enjoy doing at Devo, and drew portraits of themselves doing their chosen activities.
